VERTA: No, this was really easy.

Verta laughs.

NENETL: So that was good. Yeah. (laughs) Good job! Teamwork. High five.

VERTA: High five!

VERTA: What are your safe sex practices?

Um, generally speaking, my safe sex practices with new partners or even just with casual partners is – I’ll ask like, “When were you last tested? Would you be willing to get tested again?,” just ’cause, you know, queer and STIs are a big thing. I don’t know, the conversation is the hardest part, I feel like. As long as you’re not trying to be offensive to anyone. ‘Cause I go and get tested every two weeks ’cause I work, so I’d like that to be part of my sexual practice. Testing is part of it. Then usually we use barriers. We’ll use dams, or, you know, sometimes we keep our clothes on when we’re having queer sex. You know. Condoms are a big thing. Yeah. I don’t know. How about you? What are your safe sex practices?

VERTA: I also ask people if they’ve been tested and I have a really funny story. So I did this thing where I was like trying to find people to hook up with on OKCupid, which (shakes head) was a bad idea. Not a good idea.

NENETL (laughing): Yeah.

VERTA: But I was like talking with this guy, and I was asking him, like, “When was the last time you were tested?,” and “I’m going to get tested before we meet. Would you be willing to do that too?” And he said he would, and that, it was really, like, if I was not planning to have sex with him, that would be a really good way to get people to get tested. And then I never met him.

NENETL: Good job! I mean, good for him.

Verta laughs.

VERTA: He would have gotten tested. I got busy and I never met him. So he probably thinks that.

NENETL: Have you ever had anybody like “Yeah, I got tested” and then they show up and they don’t have their test results or something?

Verta nods yes.

NENETL: Really?!

VERTA: Yup.

NENETL: That’s awkward.

VERTA: Mm-hmm.

NENETL: What do you do?

VERTA: Not have sex with them.

NENETL: That’s smart. But I don’t know..

VERTA: I had a scare one time because I just- heat of the moment- had unprotected sex, and I went immediately to urgent care and I got preventative care. And they were like, “that’s such a smart thing to do,” and I was like, “I don’t feel smart right now.”

NENETL: They were nice to you, though?

VERTA (nodding): Yeah. Very nice to me.

NENETL: Good. When I do shows or when I do stuff with talent, I go through talent testing. But in my personal life I have insurance, so I’ll go to my doctor, and because I’m a lesbian they’re so hesitant to give you a test. They’re like, “Oh, you have the lowest risk.” And I’m like, “Yo. Take my blood. I’m giving you the forty dollars anyway, just give me my test, man.”

VERTA: Yeah.

NENETL: It’s like- I don’t know. I’ve never been shamed, but they’ve definitely been like, “You don’t really need this.” And I’m like (gestures at herself), “Whore. Giant whore. Need it. Believe me.”

VERTA: Yeah, they were very nice. What they do when you go in to get preventative care, is that they run a series of tests. Which- you won’t get the results back immediately. But then they also give you an antibiotic shot in your butt-

NENETL: Oh, cool. Ow.

VERTA (laughs): Yeah, it hurts. And they give you antibiotics and they tell you that they’ll let you know what the results are.

NENETL: Yeah.

VERTA: You can ask for- I can’t remember- what it’s called- I can never remember what it’s called- but if you feel like you might have been exposed to HIV, you can go in about two to three days- I’m not sure about that, so don’t quote me on it- and ask them for medication to stop it from growing. And then you have to come back and get tested. Like three days after.

NENETL: Like they’ll give you antivirals- and-

VERTA: Yes.

NENETL: Wow.

VERTA: Yup!

NENETL: That’s really cool- I didn’t know that. See? This is great! Now this is why I do porn. To learn stuff.

VERTA: (unintelligible) I was a very strict, abstinence only… yeah. It was crazy. So I have a lot of fears about-

NENETL: Yeah. How did you get all the info- see, I grew up in the house where everyone was like, “Sex is natural. You shouldn’t do it, but it’s natural. And if you do do it, here’s condoms. But we don’t wanna know. So I got lots of half information about a lot of stuff.

VERTA: Um- because I developed phobias about it, I did my own research.

NENETL: That’s good.

VERTA: Yeah. I get tested after every partner. I’m really- I’m so paranoid.

NENETL: That’s really healthy though. Like, that kind of attitude is good to have. Especially, ’cause, like, I don’t know. I’m really lucky. My partner is also in the industry and we have really candid conversations if one of us has been exposed or we’ve had a slip-up, we’re really open about not shaming each other and realizing we’re human and mistakes happen. So, that part is really cool- taking out a lot of the idea of dirtiness when it comes to sex. I feel really lucky to have that because that is also important, I think.

VERTA: I also text my results to my partners. (giggles) Like screenshots of it.

NENETL: I feel really good when I get my negative results. I’m like (pumps fist into air) YEAH!

VERTA (laughing): It’s a good feeling.
