Dr. Carol Queen
Dr. Queen is a writer, speaker, educator and activist with a doctorate in sexology. First as an organizer in the lesbian/gay community, where she helped found one of the first gay youth groups in the United States, and later in the emerging international bisexual community, as a sex worker and a practitioner of alternative sexualities, she typically teach and write from her own experience and that of her communities even as she reference academic thought on these subjects.
Melissa Gira
Melissa Gira Grant is a writer and sex worker. She and the Desiree Alliance founded the sex worker group blog Bound, Not Gagged and reports daily on sex and the internet for Valleywag. She founded Sexerati and consults with the Soros Foundation’s Sexual Health and Rights’ Project and the St. James Infirmary on using technology for advocacy and movement building among sex workers. B-Word Worldwide was a nonprofit (501c3), independent, feminist media organization best known for publishing Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, a print magazine devoted to feminist analysis and media criticism. Bitch featured critiques of TV, movies, magazines, advertising, and other elements of pop culture.
St. James Infirmary
St. James Infirmary offered free, confidential, nonjudgmental medical and social services for female, transgender, and male sex workers. They were the first occupational safety and health clinic for sex workers run by and for sex workers. The clinic closed in 2023.
San Francisco Sex Information
San Francisco Sex Information (SFSI) trained people to become sex educators and operates a free information and referral switchboard. They provided free, confidential, accurate, non-judgmental information about sex and reproductive health.
On Our Backs Magazine
OOB was the first erotic magazine printed by-and-for lesbians.
Lusty Ladies
The world’s only unionized, worker-owned peep show co-op, the Lusty Lady was a San Francisco original. You might recognize some of the dancers here at the Crash Pad. They are now gone, but not forgotten.
Debi Sundahl
Co-founder of “On Our Backs” magazine, adult filmmaker, sex educator, and author who dedicated her life’s work to female sexual empowerment. Debi passed away in June 2023.
Linda Williams
Film media scholar Linda Williams died in 2025. Author of Hard Core, she was a groundbreaking film scholar whose research helped establish and shape the fields of feminist film theory and pornography studies.
